Saintfield Parish

At Saintfield, most baptisms are “infant baptisms” where a baby is presented for baptism. The parents and godparents will be called upon to promise to encourage the child in the life and faith of the church, by prayer, example, teaching and love. The minister will put water over the child’s head, and using the water make a sign of the cross on the child’s forehead, to symbolise dying to sin and rising to new life in Jesus.

It is usual for the parent and child to be part of the Family Service that Sunday morning, a chance for the child to meet its Church family, and to thank God for the safe delivery and life of the child.

Occasionally however there are adult baptisms. These are conducted either by a minister from HPC or by the Bishop, and may take place alongside a service of confirmation, where adults personally confirm the promises made for them at their baptisms as children.
